BIAB vs. Traditional Gel Extensions
As a nail technician or salon owner, you are likely asked the same question by every second client who sits in your chair: "Should I get BIAB or gel extensions?"
The hashtag-fueled rise of BIAB (Builder in a Bottle) has completely transformed the nail industry. But with all the hype, there is still a lot of confusion about what BIAB actually is, how it compares to traditional hard gel extensions, and most importantly, when you should choose one over the other.
What is BIAB (Builder in a Bottle)?
BIAB is a soft builder gel packaged in a bottle with a brush. It was designed to bridge the gap between weak gel polishes and heavy hard gels. Unlike standard gel polish, which simply adds colour and has zero structural strength, a builder base allows you to build a supportive apex and a protective shield over the natural nail. You can browse Kohana's full range of Cover Builder Bases to see this in action.

The Pros of BIAB
Speedy Application: Because it comes in a bottle and has a runny, highly self-levelling consistency, you can apply it incredibly fast. If you apply it smoothly, you often don't even need to file or refine the product afterwards.
Flexibility: Soft gels are flexible. They can absorb the daily pressure and shock of using your hands, making them incredibly durable for everyday wear.
Easy Removal: Most builder-in-a-bottle formulas are soak-off products, meaning they can be removed using acetone, though many techs still prefer to e-file for speed. Kohana's removal e-file bits make this process quick and precise.
The Ideal BIAB Client
BIAB is the perfect choice for clients looking for a natural nail overlay on short to medium-length nails. It is fantastic for achieving that trendy "clean girl" aesthetic with beautiful, natural nude shades.
Important: You should not use BIAB to create long extensions. Soft gel simply does not have the rigid strength required to support long extended tips or forms.
What are Traditional Hard Gel Extensions?
Traditional gel extensions rely on hard gel, a thicker, highly structured product that usually comes in a pot. Hard gels can be self-levelling or non-levelling. Unlike BIAB, hard gel is rigid, incredibly strong, and creates an unbendable structure once cured under a UV or LED lamp. Kohana's full gel extension range covers everything from easy builders to precision control formulas.
The Pros of Hard Gel
Unbeatable Strength: Hard gel does not bend. Before it ever bends, it will crack. Because of this proper structure, you can sculpt extreme lengths, like long stiletto or coffin nails, without worrying about the nail snapping.
Versatility: You can apply hard gel on almost anything: short nails, medium nails, over tips, or sculpted over paper forms. Pair it with Kohana's range of tips and forms for flawless extension results.
Cost-Effective for Salons: While it takes a bit more time to apply and refine, hard gel in a pot is significantly cheaper per millilitre than soft gel in a bottle, giving nail techs a better profit margin.
The Ideal Hard Gel Client
Hard gel is the ultimate choice for clients who want extensions, clients who desire long nails, heavy-handed clients who put their hands through a beating, or clients with bendy, weak natural nails that need a rigid structure to prevent the product from lifting.
Important: Hard gel is a non-soak-off product. Acetone will not dissolve it, so it must be removed by buffing or using an e-file.

When to Switch a Client from BIAB to Hard Gel
Many clients get attached to the idea of BIAB because of social media. However, as a nail professional, it is your job to know when a product is no longer serving your client's nail health. Here are the three major signs it is time to make the switch:
1. The nails have grown too long BIAB acts as a protective shield that helps natural nails grow beautifully. But once the natural nail grows past 5mm over the fingertip, BIAB becomes too soft to support the free edge. Continuing to use BIAB on long nails can lead to chipping, breaking, or even painful onycholysis, which is the nail pulling away from the nail bed.
2. They are heavy-handed If your client works a tough manual job or is notoriously heavy-handed, the flexibility of BIAB might not be enough. They need the heavy-duty strength of hard gel.
3. Consistent lifting or chipping If a client comes back every few weeks with mysterious chips or lifting on their medium-length nails, their natural nail might be too bendy for soft gel. Switch them to hard gel for better retention. Proper nail preparation also plays a huge role in preventing lifting, so never skip this step.
How to say it to your client: "I've noticed your nails have grown so beautifully! Because of this new length, BIAB is actually a bit too soft to protect them now. I recommend switching you to a hard gel for your next appointment so we can keep them strong and prevent any breakages."
Kohanna Professional | BIAB Nail Polish
The truth is, it depends entirely on the client. If your client wants a fast, gorgeous natural nail overlay on shorter nails, a soft builder gel is your best friend. If they want dramatic extensions or have long natural nails that need serious structural support, traditional hard gel is the undisputed champion.
