TPO stands for Diphenyl(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)phosphine oxide. It’s a photoinitiator used in UV gel formulations to speed up the curing process when exposed to UV light. While this helps nail gels set quickly and effectively, it's important to understand the risks associated with it.
What are the risks?
Unfortunately, TPO has been linked to several health concerns. Research has shown that TPO may be carcinogenic (cancer-causing), could negatively impact fertility, and may cause skin irritation. These risks make TPO-containing products unsafe for both nail technicians and clients.
New EU Regulations: The Ban on TPO in Cosmetic Products
The European Union has reclassified TPO as a CMR 1B substance, meaning it's considered a carcinogenic and a potential fertility risk. As a result, TPO is now banned in cosmetic products under EU Regulation 1223/2009. Starting September 2025, products containing TPO will be prohibited in the EU. This move is to ensure consumer safety and that cosmetic products are as safe as possible.
